Priyanka, winner of Canada’s Drag Race, shares how chiropractic helps keep her stage ready

Date:  June 7, 2023

As many Pride festivities kick-off throughout Canada this month, the CCA was thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with Priyanka, the winner of Canada’s Drag Race. She also happens to be a regular chiropractic patient!

Priyanka began seeing a chiropractor about six years ago and explained, “I looked into chiropractic care because as someone who is always on the go, I want to make sure my body is always in tip top shape and I’m being preventative. Injury can slow people down and I have big hopes and dreams!”

Priyanka also shared her thoughts on Pride, how chiropractic care has helped, and advice for practitioners on creating welcoming spaces for the LGBTQ+ community.

What does Pride mean to you?

Pride is freedom! So many of us from the Queer community spend most of our lives in closets so it’s the time to come out and be around people just like us. It’s also a great moment for us to claim space in this world. Make some noise and be equal!

How does chiropractic care support you in your day-to-day, as well as in your performances?

A lot of us put our bodies through turmoil with how we sleep, sit, text, run, and walk. Seeing a chiropractor taught me how to do things the right way… a happy body will make for a happier life!

What do you look for in a healthcare professional?

A good vibe. I need a healthcare professional who is the least judgmental, warm, kind, caring person. Humility goes a long way, and every body has unique needs.

Some practitioners and workplaces are participating in training to learn how to create a safe place for all. Why is this important?

This is so important! Training and education are the one thing that will help make many spaces safe. I’ve had many great experiences with healthcare professionals who make me feel comfortable. The best thing for me is being given the opportunity to explain myself, vent, and really feel heard. I know healthcare professionals can get very busy but slowing down helps a lot.

If you could give one piece of advice to chiropractors about providing care for the LGBTQ+ community, what would it be?

My main advice would be to not assume. Gender norms, binary, assumptions can make for a very uncomfortable experience.
